For many of us, happiness and “mindfulness” have become essential elements of a better work-life balance and indispensable ingredients in our endeavours to create an excellent “quality of life” and, for many expats, moving to another country is often a principal part of that quest.

In January 2017 InterNations, the largest network of people living and working overseas listed twenty-one countries found to have the best “quality of life”.

The index defined a good “quality of life” as good work-life balance, access to decent educational facilities, infrastructure and quality healthcare, reasonable weather, and an affordable cost of living.

InterNations asked nearly 15,000 expats in 191 countries to rate aspects of life. The index accounted for personal happiness, transports, health and well-being, and security.

From their research, we can reveal the top five countries with the best “quality of life” for expats:

5. Costa Rica

If you want warm weather, Costa Rica is blessed with more than its fair share and the place to be, with 79% of respondents saying they feel at home in the local culture.

4. Spain

Spain is historically the most popular destination for British expat and retains that reputation today. Superb weather and friendliness of locals make it easy to settle into a new lifestyle and adapt to the local culture, helping to make Spain an attractive country for expats to “live the dream”.

3. Japan

Expats highly rate Japan for peacefulness and medical care quality, but its meteoric rise from number seven to number three in the index is mainly due to improvements to transport infrastructure.

2. Austria

Austria, a beautiful country famous for its skiing, benefits from exceptionally clean air and water contributing to elevated well-being and excellent health. Austria also comes highly commended because of its simple, reliable transport system making it straightforward for people to get around.

1. Taiwan

In top position; Taiwan.

When it comes to “Quality of Life”, Taiwan polled first for female and second for male respondents.  It wins first place this year because of its excellent cost of living and excellent medical care.
